Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Tips and Tricks

Assess Your Web Page Search Engine Optimization

High search engine rankings are the result of good inbound links and optimized web page content. You should strive for both!

Based on the factors listed below, how does your site stack up?

1. Home Page Content and Navigation - Does the text on your home page include your primary keyphrase? How about four or five supporting keyphrases? If your navigation is script/image-based, have you included a text link menu that navigates to each of your site pages or, if your site is large, links to your site categories? If you use text links, have you used link texts that contain your keyword and related keywords?

2. Inbound Links -
The more other web sites link to your web site the better. Search engines find this factor important because it is an off-site factor, meaning that it is not directly under your control. Have you submitted your web site to general directories (such as Dmoz.org)? How about industry-specific directories? Have you exchanged links with other related web sites?

3. Indexation and PageRank- When did you last check your indexed pages in Google and YAHOO? Are your key product pages indexed? PageRank is general representation of a website's popularity. What is the PageRank of these pages? Does it exceed that of your main competitors?

4. Site Architecture - Does your site utilize "spider-unfriendly URLs"? For example, if your pages link to web addresses that contain stop characters like '?', '-' or '&', the URLs may need to be rewritten. Same goes for URLs that contain session IDs. Keyword rich "breadcurmb navigation" (ie "Products > Widgets > All-weather" at the top of the page to indicate where you are) reportedly helps. Does your site use breadcrumbs?

5. Secondary Page Content - Have you entered unique "Title" and "Description" Meta Tags for each web page within your site? You are far more likely to develop links to your site if you have unique content that cannot be found elsewhere. Try to regularly add new pages, articles and resources to your web site. When did you last update your site? Have you included articles and resources that will be of value to the online community? Do your interior pages, even your product pages, at least have keyword-rich intro copy?

6. Keywords - As a rule of thumb, in most cases your keyword list should not exceed 20 phrases. Does your list exceed 20? Have you utilized any of the keyword popularity tools to ensure that the keywords you have identified are fairly popular searches?Does your site include a sitemap web page with text links to all of your web site pages. Sitemaps help search engine spiders locate and index your web pages.

7. Sitemap - Does your site include a sitemap web page with text links to all of your web site pages. Sitemaps help search engine spiders locate and index your web pages.
